M60 V8 Engine

The M60 is an excellent engine design.  It was on Ward's Autoworld magazine's 10 Best Engines list from 1995 through 1996.  In 1996 the M60 was replaced with the M62.

The M60 is well thought out and easy to work on.  BMW began design work on the engine in 1984.  It was first used in 1992 in the E32 series 740. 

This 4-liter engine develops 286 bhp (210 kW) at 5800 rpm and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque at 3900 rpm.  The 32 valves are chain-driven by four camshafts.  The 4-liter engine uses a 10:1 compression ratio.

BMW worked to make this engine's power-to-weight ratio some 30 percent better than its predecessors.  By using an aluminum head and block and a plastic intake manifold, the power-to-weight ratio is 1.61 lb/bhp (0.73 kg/bhp).
